Geoff Johns told the New York Times at the time "We changed his name for a lot of reasons. DC renamed the mainline version of the character as "Shazam" when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011, and his associates became the "Shazam Family" at this time as well. Shazam note Billy Batson, The Wizard Shazam, The Council of Wizards, The Ancient Champion, The Shazam Family Philadelphia note Freddy Freeman, The Bryer. But owing to trademark conflicts of its own over other characters named Captain Marvel owned by Marvel Comics, DC has branded and marketed the character using the trademark Shazam! since his 1972 reintroduction. DC has since integrated Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family into their DC Universe and has attempted to revive the property several times, with mixed success. In 1972, Fawcett licensed the character rights to DC, which by 1991 acquired all rights to the entire family of characters.

as Billy Batson.įawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel-related comics in 1953, partly because of a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics alleging that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman. Billy often shared his powers with other children, primarily his sister Mary Batson and their best friend/foster brother Freddy Freeman, who also transform into superheroes and fight crime with Billy as members of the Marvel Family, also known as the Shazam Family. Captain Marvel was the most popular superhero of the 1940s, outselling even Superman and was also the first comic book superhero to be adapted to film, in a 1941 Republic Pictures serial, Adventures of Captain Marvel, with Tom Tyler as Captain Marvel and Frank Coghlan, Jr. Beck and writer Bill Parker created the character in 1939, the alter ego of Billy Batson, a boy who, by speaking or thinking the magic word "Shazam!" (acronym of six "immortal elders": Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), can transform himself into a costumed adult with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight and other abilities. Other than that though, Shazam really is a ton of fun.Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam, is a superhero originally published by Fawcett Comics and currently published by DC Comics. Yeah Zachary Levi feels like a kid, but just not this kid. With this, it's two different actors, and it really does feel like two different characters.

I guess it's supposed to be something like with Spider-Man where when he's in the suit, he lets loose and feels more free to get all his quips going, but with Spider-Man that works better because the character is still played by Tom Holland. Billy is this brooding sad character, and Shazam is fun and wacky. I don't quite buy Shazam and Billy Batson as the same character. Where it doesn't quite work for me, and really my only nitpick, is the blending of the two elements.

The villain is a bit standard, but still enjoyable enough, and the movie is just a great time. Zachary Levi is absolutely fantastic as an adult superhero with a child's mind, and he's just damn funny. Here is a look at the Shazam movie cast and the characters they play. Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou also play important roles in the movie. The superhero comedy stuff all works too. Shazam starred Asher Angel as the teenage version of Billy Batson while Zachary Levi played the role of adult Billy with superpowers, aka Shazam. I didn't think I'd like all the other orphan kids, his new family, but I really enjoyed their stories. The other funny this is, it kind of works! Kind of. The funny thing with Shamaz is it almost feels like half of it is an indie film about an orphan boy finding a family and the other half is this wacky superhero movie.
